"We do have the yard professionally done, but we leave a section open where they can practice on mowing and cutting yards," Ruffin said. They will also be given the opportunity to plan, maintain and service a small area of grass on-site. In the lawncare portion of the pre-vocational program, participants have the chance to learn about tool handling, maintenance and storage. "So they may not be quite ready for supportive employment, or actually employment in the community, and so we try to help build skills toward employment as well as more independent living," "It's really geared toward trying to help individuals learn skills that would benefit them in the workforce," Mathews said. Pre-vocational services include education and hands-on experiences in areas such as lawn care, woodworking, janitorial services, horticulture and vehicle care to help promote future employment opportunities. "But we do teach them how to try and be as independent as they can in the kitchen - stuff like coffee, toast, Pop-Tarts - and teach them how to bake a little bit." "We don't really have a big oven because we don't cook 'hard' food for lunch - we do sandwiches and stuff like that," Serenity Springs project coordinator Edward Ruffin said. There's even a spa and wellness center for personal grooming - including hand and arm massages, nail care services and hair styling - and a movie theater with a large mounted flat-screen television.ĭay program participants also have access to other amenities around the facility, such as a laundry room in which they can learn how to wash and iron clothing and a kitchen with a convection oven. Participants can relax in a bean bag chair or experiment with several different musical instruments or a karaoke machine. One of the highlights of the day program is the sensory room, which includes a solar effects projector with a rotation lens for ambiance. "We may have them involved in art classes, for instance - just doing things that are in the community that you and I would participate in as well." "This is for those individuals who may need a little more assistance with your regular activities of daily living," Mathews said. The day program is designed to promote community outreach and exploration in areas including music, arts and crafts, computer education, sports, games and teamwork. The center, which currently has two program participants with four more expected to start this week, offers its day and pre-vocational programs from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. "It's a lot more cost-effective, and it really gets people involved and integrated into their home community." "You want to get individuals out of the state-operated regional centers and into the community," REM Mississippi State Director Jessica Mathews said.
